Rebellious punk ethos pushes societal constraints.

Queer as Punk follows Malaysian LGBTQ+ punk band Shh…Diam! (Malay for “Shut up!”), fronted by trans man Faris and his two bandmates Yon and Yoyo. The trio’s dynamic refusal of silence is part of a bold fight for LGBTQ+ rights in a country where personal freedoms are intensely restricted.

Through an intimate lens, award-winning documentary filmmaker Yihwen Chen (The Boys

Club) weaves together concert and travel footage with candid conversations on queer identity, parental expectations, religion, and Malaysia’s shifting political landscape. The resulting film will draw you in with both its defiant music and its unconventional exploration of chosen family.
